Become a Panther Advocate

The purpose of the Panther Advocate volunteer program is to identify, inform, and activate passionate UNI alumni who have an interest in affecting legislation of importance to the University of Northern Iowa. A Panther Advocate commits to staying informed and readily responding when called to action. Our singular goal is to increase the purple presence and enhance the effectiveness of legislative advocacy from UNI Alumni.

The Panther Advocate commits to the following duties:

  • Stay informed by reading the weekly Panther Caucus newsletter
  • Acting when necessary by writing emails and letters, calling or meeting with legislators with the provided talking points to promote and advance UNI initiatives
  • Attend an annual virtual training on the best methods for advocating
  • Attend the Day at the Capitol in Des Moines, typically the third Monday in February to meet with representatives and share the impact of UNI or Day at the Capitol in D.C. (date to be determined)
  • Meet with state senators and state representatives at least one time a year through town halls, forums, coffee hours, or requesting an individual meeting
  • Panther Advocates will serve UNI in stewarding legislators who assist and advocate for policies positively impacting UNI
