The 91st General Assembly convenes with the governor showing support for UNI’s initiatives
As you know, Iowa faces a pressing challenge: our state has more job openings than people to fill them, and population growth isn’t keeping pace with retirements. To address this, the University of Northern Iowa is stepping up with an innovative solution that aligns with Gov. Reynolds’ vision to attract talent from other states. We are honored to have this initiative included in the Governor’s FY26 budget.
UNI is requesting $3 million in FY 2026 to launch a Workforce Recruitment Initiative. This funding will allow UNI to offer in-state tuition rates to students from contiguous states, encouraging talented individuals to study, live and work in Iowa. Here’s why your support matters:
- Economic Impact: Historically, 40-50% of UNI graduates who came from out of state stay in Iowa post-graduation, directly growing Iowa’s workforce and contributing to our economy.
- Proven Success: UNI graduates enter the job market with real-world experience — more than 90% participate in internships, fieldwork or part-time jobs in their chosen fields.
- Curriculum Aligned to Iowa’s Workforce: UNI’s curriculum aligns with Iowa’s workforce needs, as our renowned business and education programs and newly launched nursing program directly prepare graduates for the state’s high-demand fields.
Your leadership is critical to advancing this effort and securing Iowa’s future as a vibrant, thriving state. Together, we can ensure that Iowa remains competitive, attracting and retaining the best and brightest.
We are also grateful for the governor’s proposed budget, which includes a 2% general fund increase for UNI, $4.72 million to renovate the historic Commons to house our new Center for Civic Education and $3 million to support the Workforce Recruitment Initiative. Additionally, we are requesting $1 million to help launch the Center for Civic Education and $1.63 million for UNI@IACC, which provides grants to community college students, helping them complete a four-year degree. These investments reflect a shared commitment to advancing education, fostering civic engagement and addressing Iowa’s workforce challenges. Your continued support will be vital to turning these proposals into reality.
Thank you for your dedication to Iowa and its people. We look forward to collaborating with you to bring this vision to life. Together, we can grow Iowa’s workforce!
