UNI's accounting program prepares students for real world

Spring is a busy season for the more than 3,000 UNI accounting alumni working in 92 Iowa counties. It's not much different for the students within UNI's Department of Accounting.

Beginning the second week of February, junior, senior and graduate accounting students provide free income tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Through mid-April, they prepare federal and state tax returns free of charge for members of the Cedar Falls/Waterloo and campus communities. The accounting students gain valuable, practical work experience as they prepare more than 400 federal and state tax returns each year.  

Other spring events include:

• A spring seminar hosted by the McGladrey Center for Accounting Education at UNI, supported by an endowment from the partners and employees of McGladrey
• The annual Accounting Scholarship Reception, where more than $100,000 will be awarded to accounting students

Finally, spring wouldn't be complete without our graduating seniors and master's students studying for the CPA exam. The students, who typically sit for all four parts of the exam in May, are currently entrenched in study guides and training sessions. UNI graduates have a strong tradition of success on the CPA exam.
