UNI ROTC student receives prestigious Governor's Cup Award

University of Northern Iowa Cadet Capt. Mark R. Wieneke was one of only nine students to receive the Governor's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Award for outstanding achievement this year. The annual awards "honor the men and women for leadership, academics and military achievement."

Wieneke grew up in Ankeny and previously served in the Iowa National Guard 133rd Infantry Regiment in Waterloo and with the 133rd A Company in Dubuque. He is currently a biology major at UNI with an impressive 3.54 GPA. After graduation he plans to commission in the Iowa National Guard as an infantry officer and attend optometry school.

The UNI Panther Battalion has been producing outstanding Army officers since 1891.

The University of Northern Iowa is hosting a daylong conference designed to bring together military, civic and educational leaders to discuss and assess their roles and responsibilities in supporting violence prevention.

The keynote speaker is Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Cucolo III, commander of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. The event will also feature a panel of senior military leaders and nationally recognized experts to discuss the success and challenges of addressing and ending sexual violence in the military.

The Y Factor: Military Summit is sponsored by the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Violence Prevention (CVP), in partnership with UNI's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), UNI's Military and Veteran Student Services and HopeLine® from Verizon. It will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, in the Maucker Union Ballroom.
