Getting a 'Jump Start' on college
Later this month the University of Northern Iowa is hosting approximately 120 incoming freshmen and transfer students for a week-long orientation intended to provide a smooth transition to college. The Jump Start program is designed for students from underrepresented minority groups and/or students who have participated in TRIO programs (such as Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search). Arriving on campus a week early allows these new students additional time to learn about student services, academic and financial aid policies; but most importantly, an opportunity to develop connections with peers, faculty, and staff.
Now in its 16th year at UNI, Jump Start allows participants to move into the residence halls a week early to participate in fun and interactive sessions on topics such as diversity, campus involvement, budgeting, library orientation, academic planning, and leadership. The program is so popular it grew 35 percent from 2011 to 2012 and many of the participants return to Jump Start to serve as Pathfinders, or mentors for the incoming students.
"Jump Start is a great time to socialize and meet other new students. It gives you a head start on getting to know faculty and staff and feel comfortable on campus before school starts." - Avary Bradford, a junior in Public Relations from Cedar Rapids and 2014 Pathfinder
The friendships students make during that first week often last throughout their college career. This year's Jump Start runs from Sunday, August 17 - Friday, August 22, 2014.
