An incredible passion for leadership
Rachael Johnson, a UNI freshman double majoring in elementary- and middle-level education, has been appointed to the Iowa Board of Regents by Gov. Terry Branstad. As a student member, she will be the voice of all students who attend Regents institutions.
“My biggest goal overall is to be a voice for all the students across Iowa,” said Johnson. “I want students to feel as though they can approach me, and I’ll take what they said to the board.”
Johnson is from Sioux City where she attended Sioux City North High School. She's always been surrounded by the world of learning and feels the seed of education was planted in her at an early age. Johnson had the opportunity to volunteer on various committees for the Sioux City Community School District, which showed her the intriguing inner workings of the field of education.
At UNI, she is a part of the Northern Iowa Student Government and is an Ambassador to the College of Education. She also serves on the student government campus relations committee and Pepsi fund committee.
“I really wanted to make a difference not only here on campus but across the entire state, and this is the perfect opportunity to do that,” said Johnson. On the Board of Regents she will have full responsibilities of membership: attending meetings, serving on committees and voting.
"I am so honored to be able to represent so many outstanding students from across the state of Iowa. I am looking forward to advocating for all the students and making sure that the student voice is well represented at the state level," said Johnson.
Pending approval by the Iowa Senate, Johnson will begin her term on May 1.
