Hands-on experience benefits UNI students and Iowa companies
UNI students are building the future of tomorrow one sand grain at a time
The University of Northern Iowa Metal Casting Center brings together classroom principles and theories with hands-on experience that benefits not only students, but also Iowa companies. Through UNI's ExOne S-Max large format 3-D printer, students gain extensive knowledge in the emerging area of printed sand mold and core production and provide additive manufacturing services to Iowa companies. Upon graduation, students are able take their expertise and assist companies to utilize emerging advanced manufacturing technologies.
Kip Woods, a senior from Jesup majoring in advanced manufacturing and metal casting, is one such student. He emphasized, "As an undergraduate I am able to work on world-class aerospace industry and Department of Defense projects."
Woods transferred to UNI from Hawkeye Community College after serving in the Air Force, including a deployment to Qatar. "Very few undergraduate programs incorporate this amount of real-world training in rapid prototyping and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) part production," said Woods.
Some of the 75 companies served by UNI's Metal Casting Center's 3-D sand mold printer include:
- Deere & Company - Waterloo and Moline R&D Center
- UES - Waverly
- Sivyer Steel - Bettendorf
- Caterpillar - Peoria, Ill.
- Vermeer Manufacturing - Pella
- Viking Pump - Cedar Falls
- Wellman Dynamics Fansteel - Cresco
- SeeBee Foundry - New Hartford
- American Pattern Co. - Cedar Falls
