UNI prepares students for the future
Ready. Set. Career!
When employers interview UNI students for jobs and internships, theyre looking for candidates with classroom knowledge as well as soft skills, such as flexibility, creativity, a team-player mentality, and the ability to set and achieve goals.
UNI students can learn how to harness the power of their academic preparation and personal qualifications by working with a career counselor in the Office of Career Services.
Each semester career services offers free seminars on how to ace an interview, how to dress to impress, and how to write a cover letter and resume that compels hiring managers to pick up the phone and schedule an interview.
Students can also schedule a mock interview with a career services counselor and get immediate feedback on what they said to the employer, how they said it and how likely they are to receive a job offer.
Career-readiness resources are also available on the Career Center website, such as sample questions to rock in-person and phone interviews, before-and-after resumes that outline what works and why, and how to write a powerful cover letter that keeps a resume in the "Must Contact" pile.
UNI holds two career fairs, one teacher fair and one overseas recruiting fair each year that brings several hundred employers and graduate schools to campus, such as Ernst & Young, Des Moines Community Schools and UnityPoint Health.
Students also have access to UNIs job board that lists dozens of on- and off-campus jobs.
