MARK NOOK BECOMES UNI'S 11TH PRESIDENT

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you UNI’s 11th President Mark Nook, a native Iowan and longtime Midwesterner. Nook will assume his duties on Feb. 1, 2017.

The Iowa Board of Regents selected Mark Nook on Tuesday, Dec. 6th. He has been serving as the chancellor at Montana State University Billings.

In his acceptance speech at the announcement in Maucker Union, Nook lauded UNI as “one of the great public comprehensive universities,” and praised the amazing work that has been done. He expressed his excitement to begin working with the students, faculty and staff “to build this university, to help support this state and to continue to educate Iowans to serve Iowa.”

Prior to serving as the chancellor at Montana State University Billings from 2014-2016, Nook held the position of senior vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin System from 2011-2014. He also served as provost (2007-09, 2010-11) and interim chancellor (2009-10) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and in a variety of roles at St. Cloud State University.

Nook grew up in Holstein, Iowa, an hour east of Sioux City. He graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University with a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics in 1980, before obtaining a master's degree in astrophysics from Iowa State University in 1983. Nook received his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990.

Jim Wohlpart, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, will continue to serve as interim president until Nook takes office.
