Meet the next generation of UNI alumni

Our graduating seniors found a place where they belonged at the University of Northern Iowa. Their tireless academic preparation, strong relationships with faculty and other students, and wide variety of out-of-class experiences have helped create a strong foundation for their future. These are but a few of our promising fall graduates:

Patricia Brandt

Hometown: Algona
Major(s): Social Science Education Plan B
Post-graduation plans: Student teaching at Algona Middle School and Humboldt High School.

“I came to UNI because of their prestigious education program. The university felt like home. I went to a small school, and UNI was the perfect size for me. It had a big university feel, but also had small class sizes.”

“UNI has prepared me for my post-graduation plans tremendously. As a preservice teacher, I was in local classrooms getting experience working with school-aged kids and mentor teachers. This experience in the classroom will help me feel more confident as I near having my own classroom.”

“I think students should choose UNI for their education because of the great environment here. The students are nice, the professors are extremely helpful, and there are so many opportunities to get involved on campus and grow your leadership skills.”

Mary Corwin

Hometown: Dike
Major(s): Social Work
Post-graduation plans: Considering the Advanced Placement MSW program at UNI, with intentions obtain employment as a Social Worker at the Veterans Health Administration hospital in Iowa City or one of its satellite clinics.

“Being a non-traditional student, I was apprehensive about being in class with young adults; however, I found it to be an incredible time of growth for me personally due to my fellow student’s contrasting perspectives and boundless energy.”

“UNI has an excellent reputation for its Social Work program. Getting to know the Social Work program cadre and observing their dedication to student’s success has inspired me to give strong consideration to furthering my educational pursuits through UNI.”

“UNI has a first-rate teaching staff, the college is located in a friendly community, and tuition is affordable.”

Landon Sivesind

Hometown: Waukon
Major(s): Supply Chain Management and Marketing/Sales
Post-graduation plans: Working in January as a Sourcing Specialist for Rockwell Collins (now Collins Aerospace) in Cedar Rapids.

“What attracted me the most about UNI was the overall culture, size, and offerings through the college of business. From my first visit I could tell it was a very friendly and community focused culture throughout campus.

Everyone I encountered was willing to interact with and help me in whatever way I needed and at that point I realized how valued the students were. The size proved that all the resources I would need, both on and off campus, would be accessible within a 10 minute walk.”

“One of my greatest experiences at UNI was being able to study and work abroad in Dublin, Ireland. Opportunities like these are what allowed me to expand my knowledge, develop more relationships, enhance my resume, and further distinguish myself when entering the work force. These experiences and opportunities would not have been possible if it was not for the financial support from the university and the connections I made with my peers and professors throughout my time at UNI.”

“UNI pushed me outside of my comfort zone, challenged me, and gave me hands on experience outside of the classroom. It is simple for a University to ensure a student gets good grades while in college, but UNI is focused on the development of its students and will ensure those students have the necessary skill sets and resources for them to succeed after graduation.”

Holly Trenkamp

Hometown: Dyersville
Major(s): Health Promotion and Education
Post-graduation plans: Working at a new non-profit, Guiding Star Cedar Valley, as office manager.

“When I visited UNI my senior year of high school, I didn't know the exact details of what I wanted in a university, but I knew two things that were important to me: a great community and a solid education. UNI has gone above and beyond in providing those two qualities, and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.”

“UNI provided exceptional opportunities for growth and introduced me to the people to help me succeed in those opportunities. I've been able to gain real-world experiences in my field of study with incredible support of professors and advisors. I've been able to take opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to have anywhere else!”

Megan Petersen

Post-graduation plans: Staying in the Cedar Valley area while looking for Marketing/Business opportunities.

“If you're looking for a university with a small, community-like feel, come to UNI.”

“UNI taught me a lot about networking and how to get involved. I enjoyed the community here and the ability to get involved in so many different activities and create life-long connections.”
