Meet the next generation of Panthers

Our graduating seniors found a place where they belonged at the University of Northern Iowa. Their tireless academic preparation, strong relationships with faculty and other students, and wide variety of out-of-class experiences have helped create a strong foundation for their future. These are but a few of our promising spring 2019 graduates:

Yakira Sanders

Hometown: Des Moines
Major(s): Social Work
Post-graduation plans: Attending Iowa State University to further my education in Higher Education and Student Affairs.

“UNI provided me with the tools to be successful while also challenging me to step outside of my comfort zone. UNI gave me so many opportunities to grow as a leader and explore career opportunities.

“The faculty and staff at UNI truly care about their students and offer several resources to guide you during your time at UNI. You are not just a number at UNI. The UNI community makes you feel a sense of belonging that will make your four years an enjoyable adventure.”

Ismael Quiñones

Hometown: Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México
Major(s): Communication Studies
Post-graduation plans: Joining the department of communication arts and sciences at Penn State University in State College, Pennsylvania, as a Ph.D. student in rhetoric.

“After looking at different schools to continue my education as a graduate student, I decided to come to UNI because of the attention that faculty invest in their students. Faculty in the communication studies department are amongst the best people to help you navigate the field. They were always supportive with my research and made me a better writer.

“Few other schools will give you the time and quality of education that focuses in what you are interested. If you come to UNI, not only will you find a fostering environment, but you will be able to focus your studies in what you want to do, and faculty will trust your judgment and guide you through the process.”

Jackie Armstrong

Hometown: Saint Ansgar
Major(s): Biology
Post-graduation plans: Launching a long-term study on the impact of carbon soil amendments to discourage invasive species and encourage native sedges and write freelance articles on the environment.

“After retirement from my legal career, I wanted to better understand science and integrate that understanding with advocacy skills.

“UNI is a very flexible academic community that can work in different ways for a whole spectrum of students. It gives 'self-directed' students an open highway for working toward their goals; it gives 'explorers' a wide array of stimulating classes so they may discover their passion; and it gives 'shy students' a very supportive environment for growing confidence.”

Nick Kayser

Hometown: Bode
Major(s): Triple major in Supply Chain Management, Finance and Real Estate
Post-graduation plans: Moving to Cedar Rapids and working for Collins Aerospace as a sourcing specialist.

“It is honestly so hard to pick the most enjoyable thing during my attendance at UNI, because I enjoyed everything about it. I fell in love with my study abroad trip to Ireland where I experienced international business. I had a blast living on campus where I met some of the best friends that I will have the rest of my life. Also, I enjoyed every second in the student organizations and on-campus jobs that developed the person I am today.

“UNI has given me a great foundation of skills and knowledge that will easily assist me as I move into the workforce. UNI has given me everything that will aid me to succeed in the future and reach my dreams!”
