UNI’s construction management program serving Iowa industry needs
UNI posts a 100 percent placement rate for construction management graduates, with 92 percent staying in Iowa. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to making sure the program’s curriculum meets the high standards Iowa industry wants and needs.
Iowa construction company presidents attest that UNI is delivering what they want.
“UNI construction management graduates come to us with a very well-rounded education and move into leadership positions quickly in our company. Our current workforce is aging, and Iowa needs this program to fill the predicted employee shortage in our industry. In order to ensure that, UNI needs to provide an educational experience that mirrors current industry standards and technology.”
Brad Best | President, Peters Construction Corporation
“The construction management interns and full-time employees we hire from UNI are exceptional. As a business, we depend upon our partnership with UNI to help supply our workforce, but the students need to learn in a modern, up-to-date environment in order to continue to compete in our industry.”
Katy Susong | President, Cardinal Construction
“UNI’s Industrial Technology Center is home to coveted programs such as the construction management major that serve Iowa’s growing workforce needs. Iowa industry relies heavily on this program for employees – we will see a decline in numbers and quality grads without this important reinvestment.”
Steve Hauschilt | President, Graham Construction

This past spring, the construction management undergraduate research class used a project provided by Ryan Companies as a major learning activity. The project required a full proposal for a 64-unit Senior Living Center, and UNI students competed against eight other regional construction management programs. Four students from this class presented their proposal at the regional competition in Minneapolis in April 2019.

In March 2019, a team of six construction management students finished third (out of 22) in the project management category at the Associated Builders and Contractors National Student Competition in Long Beach, California.

UNI is requesting $39.7 million over three years in state appropriations to modernize the Industrial Technology Center building, which includes the construction management program. A modernized building is estimated to increase space to accommodate more students, and the better facilities will attract more students and allow UNI’s Department of Technology programs to align with industry practices. A new facility is estimated to increase enrollment in the department by 40 percent by 2025
