UNI’s Metal Casting Center unveils foundry modernization project

Over the past year, the University of Northern Iowa’s Metal Casting Center has undergone a series of extensive renovations to transform student experiences and industry partnerships. These upgrades include significant changes to the facility’s infrastructure and the addition of cutting-edge equipment. Together, these advances position the center as a leader in foundry education and research.

The renovations introduced a range of improvements, starting with improved lighting, power sources, air supply systems and renovated staff offices. These changes create a safer and more efficient environment for students and staff. This new equipment plays a crucial role in advancing the foundry’s capabilities and aids the center in research, process development, testing and industry training.

In addition to supporting research and development, these upgrades offer significant educational benefits. The foundry now houses industrial-scale equipment rarely found in academic institutions. This real-world exposure allows students to develop technical expertise in foundry operations, preparing them to become subject matter experts in the field. Whether their goal is to enter manufacturing, engineering or another industry, students will graduate with practical skills that are directly applicable to their careers.

“I would encourage any student, regardless of major, to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Metal Casting Center,” says Drew James, director. “This is a great industry, and the skills developed can be applied in many areas.”

With these upgrades, the foundry is not only preparing the next generation of foundry professionals but also positioning itself as a valuable resource for industry innovation and collaboration.
