UNI's economic development programs serve and grow in 2014

The University of Northern Iowa's Business and Community Services, a one-stop location that focuses on small businesses, implements 13 programs that support businesses and entrepreneurs, communities and regions, and the environment and sustainability.

In 2014, these programs served nearly 2,000 businesses, had active projects in all 99 counties, and included participation of 250 faculty and 1,900 students. Each state dollar invested in UNI's economic development efforts leverages nearly $5 in federal, grants or private sources.

Program highlights include:

Additive Manufacturing – UNI is home to North America's largest commercial-size 3-D printer that can produce molds for virtually any metal alloy. More than 75 companies are working with UNI's Metal Casting Center to utilize the printer.

Advance Iowa – UNI's economic gardening program is developing business leaders and delivering marketplace intelligence. Advance Iowa's economic impact is exceptional. The program has 51 actively engaged clients, created 90 new jobs, have projects in 31 counties and served nine industry sectors.

Business Concierge Program – More than 1,000 Iowa small businesses have been served through the Business Concierge Program.

Dream Big Grow Here – The Dream Big Program has provided support to 779 total business entrants, has 100 percent statewide coverage and provides access to early-stage seed funding.

Business and Community Services will continue to cater to the needs of Iowa businesses, providing unsurpassed expertise and knowledge in 2015 and beyond.

The public is invited to celebrate with the UNI men's basketball team as the field for the 2015 NCAA Tournament is revealed. A watch party will take place at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 15. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.; the selection show on CBS will begin at 5 p.m.
