UNI Graduates Find Success
The 2013 Graduate Report is out and appears to show an improving economy for UNI alumni. Of the respondents, 88 percent were either employed or receiving further education — the second highest number in the past five years. "We are getting really close to pre-recession levels of hiring," said Matt Nuese, associate director of Career Services. The annual Career Ready survey categorizes graduates by department and major; and in some programs, respondents reported a 100 percent success rate:
- Real Estate
- Special Education
- Math Teaching
- Chemistry and Biochemistry
- Geographic Information Science
- Construction Management
"We are seeing a strong trend that, if there are jobs in Iowa, our students want to stay in Iowa," said Nuese. That's where UNI Career Services can help. "We conduct a significant amount of employer outreach, including hosting more than 250 employers on campus annually." They also provide resume and interview tips, one on one advice, and an online job board.
UNI uses the numbers from the graduate report as a benchmark for how the university is serving the state. Student feedback can lead to curriculum changes and improved programs. The system works well. Historically nine out of 10 students are employed or attending graduate school within six months of graduation.
