UNI expects boost in on-campus living in 2024-2025
The University of Northern Iowa anticipates another increase in the number of students choosing to live on campus for the 2024-25 school year. UNI projects approximately 3,200 students to choose living on-campus in the residence halls and apartments next fall, a 2.76% increase from 2023-24, the highest occupancy on campus since 2018.
The university’s recent contract renewal period saw a near record number of returning students, with an increase of 15% over the prior year.
University of Northern Iowa will have the smallest housing and dining rate increase for room and board among the Regent universities at 3.5%, compared with University of Iowa at 4.8% and Iowa State University at 5.8%. Final rate approvals will be heard at the April meeting of the Iowa Board of Regents.
“Living on campus is a vital component to a student’s success,” said Nick Rafanello, assistant vice president and executive director of UNI Housing & Dining. “Students living on campus are more likely to stay at UNI, more likely to graduate, and earn higher GPAs than their off-campus peers. Living on campus is convenient and provides opportunities for students to be more involved on campus and more connected to UNI.”
Strong on-campus numbers are bolstered by UNI’s Live 2 Succeed two-year commitment program. All new incoming students – first-year and transfer – who contract to live on campus their first two years will receive a $1,000 Student Success Scholarship in their second year. Additionally, as part of the program, students receive priority room selection for each year they continue living on campus.
