UNI Army ROTC a successful program

The University of Northern Iowa's Army ROTC has seen many successes in 2015. Here are just a few:

The partnership of UNI's Army ROTC program and Center for Violence Prevention (CVP), which started in September 2013, has impacted almost 7,000 leaders nationwide. This partnership began with Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) training for UNI cadets and soon spread to 500 cadets in the Midwest and three Midwest conferences. UNI cadets took the MVP training nationwide at Fort Knox, Kentucky, this past summer. Our cadets, along with trained cadets at Iowa State, facilitated MVP training for almost 6,000 of their peers this past summer.

UNI ROTC completed another successful summer training period:

  • 29 cadets completed a summer training program at locations in the U.S. and around the world

  • 18 incoming senior cadets completed the month-long Cadet Leader Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, which prepares them for their final year before commissioning as an officer

  • 3 new cadets completed the four-week Cadet Initial Entry Training at Fort Knox, which prepared them to start the advanced course portion of Military Science classes

  • 6 cadets traveled overseas for the Cultural Understanding and Language Program where they interacted with their counterparts in the countries they visited

  • 2 cadets completed Cadet Professional Field Training

UNI ROTC held its fall Leader Training Exercise at Boy Scout Camp Ingawanis Sept. 25-27. Sixty-nine cadets participated in the training event, which focused on leader development. Training events included problem-solving/decision-making activities, land navigation and small unit leadership. The ROTC program conducts one Leader Training Exercise each semester, which allows the cadets to put into practice many of the skills on which they are trained each semester.
