Thankful for your continued support

The earliest report of a Thanksgiving celebration at UNI comes from the student newspaper, The Students' Offering, in 1878, just two years after the school's founding:

“At ten o'clock, the students assembled at Normal Hall, and listened to a very able and appropriate sermon… At noon, all were happy in the prospect of dinner, and none were disappointed. Such a dinner! Col. Pattee and Mrs. Parsons, bless their generous souls, entirely surpassed themselves on this occasion, producing a dinner never to be forgotten by those who enjoyed it. Altogether, the day was a very pleasant one.”

This Thanksgiving, Cheryl and I are thankful for your continued support in our efforts to make UNI education an affordable and accessible tool to improve our wonderful state. We are grateful for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends for their dedication and passion. They make a positive difference by strengthening their communities and creating great places to live and work. We hope you have a happy and safe holiday filled with the company of loved ones and the laughter of friends.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1928 a football match was scheduled between Teachers College and Des Moines University. Teachers College won the match and beat Des Moines University, 12-7, to win the Iowa Conference championship.

Help cheer on all the Panthers this weekend as they work to bring home conference championships.

  • UNI is hosting the Missouri Valley Conference volleyball championships at the McLeod Center. Our Panthers are the No. 1 seed, and we’re hoping to win the tournament for the 18th time.
  • UNI Football hosts San Diego in the first round of the FCS Playoffs in the UNI-Dome 1 p.m on Saturday.
