Remembering Our Fallen Soldiers and Hometown Heroes

On this upcoming Memorial Day, we pause and honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Hibbs Memorial on UNI’s campus honors one such individual. The memorial is located east of the West Gymnasium and honors Lt. Robert J. Hibbs, class of 1964, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions in Vietnam.

Lt. Robert Hibbs is remembered not only for his service and sacrifice, but as a member of the UNI community who was involved on campus. Hibbs was a member of Pi Gamma Mu, the social science honorary society, and participated in the Social Science Seminar study tour in Europe. His professors remembered him as bright, open, friendly, well-adjusted and interested; a good, solid student who especially liked history. President Maucker remarked, “Hibbs exemplified the traits of character that we are always proud to see in graduates of this institution.”

This Monday, we remember and reflect on our freedom that was gained by our fallen soldiers and to give recognition to their service.
